The Origin Story: How Jupiter Brought CCELL® to the U.S. Cannabis Market
As Jupiter celebrates 10 Years of Excellence, we’re looking back at our pivotal moments: the people, customers, and brands we serve and how Jupiter has helped shape the modern cannabis vaporization industry through innovation, performance, and service.
Today, vaporization is one of the most widely adopted methods of cannabis consumption. However, 10 years ago the category was still in its infancy. The hardware available to emerging cannabis brands had been designed primarily for nicotine vapes – not for the thicker, more complex, oils we see in cannabis. Solving for that would require a new kind of technology . . . enter Jupiter Research and its founder Mark Scatterday.
The Problem with Early Vape Tech
In the early days of cannabis vaporization, hardware was unreliable with leaking cartridges, inconsistent heat, and poor user experiences plagued brands and frustrated consumers. Most devices were dependent on wick and coil designs for e-liquids which were not optimized for the higher viscosity oils.
Operators trying to build trusted brands were limited by the technology available to them. The market was hungry for something better.
Championing a Solution
Mark Scatterday, Jupiter’s founder, built his career developing and commercializing products in China for US consumers. Prior to founding Jupiter Research, Mark was the head of Product and Innovation at NJOY, the company to first bring the electronic cigarette to market (with Mark as its product leader).
As the e-cigarette industry took off, Mark identified another emerging market for him to apply his unique expertise: Cannabis. Mark approached Smoore Technologies and together, Jupiter and Smoore re-engineered their industry leading ceramic heating technology to create the Liquid 9 ceramic cartridge and introduce CCELL technology to the cannabis world.
It was immediately clear that this wasn’t just an improvement; it was a revolution.
Introducing CCELL to the U.S.
The opportunity was clear: Mark Scatterday co-founded Jupiter Research in 2015.
Jupiter introduced CCELL hardware to the U.S. market in 2016, commercializing products with brands like Timeless, Airo, and Select. The journey wasn’t without challenges and as with any emerging market, Jupiter spent much of its time in the early days educating the market, supporting early adopters, and proving performance at scale. It required dedication, collaboration, partnership development, and focused execution.
Building Trust, Setting the New Standard
As more brands adopted CCELL through Jupiter, the difference was undeniable. The consumer experience improved; brands saw stronger customer loyalty, and expectations across the industry shifted. Jupiter didn’t just sell hardware, we helped make the vape category viable for brand development.
What began as an innovative breakthrough quickly became the industry standard. By delivering hardware designed specifically for cannabis oils, Jupiter helped leading brands scale with greater consistency, reliability, and confidence in the products reaching consumers.
A decade later our first customers are still leading the industry forward. Curaleaf just released the Briq2, Timeless released the T-Series, and Airo and Curaleaf have just launched the first medically registered devices into the European market…all through Jupiter.
This speaks to who Jupiter is as a company and how we continue to evolve internally and in support of the cannabis industry globally.
A New Milestone in 2025
Ten years later, we are still marking firsts in the industry. In 2025, Jupiter achieved the first EU certification for a medical cannabis vaporization device, setting a new benchmark for safety, quality, and regulatory compliance in emerging global markets.
This achievement reflects years of engineering collaboration and validation, and it opens the door for broader adoption of medical cannabis vaporization across Europe. Working alongside our trusted partners, Curaleaf and Airo, Jupiter is excited to support the next phase of industry growth bringing reliable, high-quality vaporization technology to medical pharmacies and patients across the European medical cannabis market.
